What blood pressure monitor fits a small arm?

The narrowest included cuff in our catalogue starts at 8.6 inches, on the A&D UA-767F and UA-651 and the Beurer BM67. The Withings BPM Connect and BPM Vision, the Beurer BM26 and the iHealth Track all start at 8.7 inches. Below about 8.6 inches you are into small adult and paediatric cuffs that most home monitors do not offer at all.

The models to be careful with are the wide-range Omrons. Their cuff is excellent up to 17 inches and starts at 9, so a genuinely slim arm can sit below it. Measure before you buy.

Where the floor actually is

Almost every buying guide treats cuff fit as a large-arm problem. It is not. A cuff that is too large for your arm under-reads, in the same way a cuff that is too small over-reads, and a slim adult can fall below the range of a monitor sold plainly as an adult model.

Sorted by where the included cuff starts, the difference across our catalogue is only about half an inch, and that half inch is the whole decision if you measure near the boundary.

If your arm is under 8.6 inches

Ask your clinician rather than buying blind. Small adult and paediatric cuffs exist, but almost no consumer monitor ships with one, and a cuff sold as compatible is a claim about fastening rather than accuracy. The AHA also says that when choosing a monitor for a child, you should make sure it is validated for them, which is a different question from whether the cuff physically fits.

Common questions

What is the smallest arm a home blood pressure monitor fits?

Of the monitors we track, the included cuff floor is 8.6 inches, on the A&D UA-767F, the A&D UA-651 and the Beurer BM67. Several others start at 8.7 inches. Below that you are into small adult and paediatric cuffs, which almost no consumer monitor includes.

Can a cuff be too big?

Yes. An oversized cuff spreads the pressure over more tissue than it should and tends to under-read, which is the mirror image of the over-reading you get from a cuff that is too small. Fit matters in both directions.

Do the wide-range Omron cuffs work on a slim arm?

They start at 9 inches. That is fine for most adults and it is above the floor set by the A&D and Beurer models, so if you measure between 8.6 and 9 inches the Omron wide-range cuff is the one to rule out first.

Is a wrist monitor better for a small arm?

Not automatically. The AHA recommends an upper arm cuff and does not recommend wrist or finger monitors, because they give less reliable readings. Use a wrist model when an upper arm cuff genuinely will not fit, and hold your wrist at heart height every time.
