What blood pressure monitor fits a large arm?

For an arm up to 17 inches, the wide-range Omron cuff is the answer: the Platinum BP5465, Gold BP5360, Silver BP5255, Bronze BP5150, Iron BP5000, Evolv BP7000 and Complete BP7900 all ship with a cuff rated 9 to 17 inches. That is the widest included cuff in our catalogue.

Above 17 inches, nothing we track fits out of the box. The Withings BPM Vision is the one model whose own validation listing names a 40 to 52 cm cuff, sold separately. Measure first: the number that matters is the circumference of your upper arm, not your shirt size.

This counts only the cuff that ships in the box. Several monitors accept a larger or smaller cuff sold separately, and those are listed on the model's own page rather than counted as a fit here.

Why a cuff that is too small matters

A cuff works by squeezing the artery until the flow stops, then releasing. If the bladder inside is too short for your arm, it has to squeeze harder to get there, and the monitor records that extra pressure as your blood pressure. The reading comes out high. Nothing about the monitor is broken and no amount of technique fixes it.

This is why the AHA tells you to measure around your upper arm and choose a monitor that comes with the correct cuff size, rather than assuming an adult cuff is an adult cuff. Our cuff sizing guide walks through taking the measurement.

If no included cuff fits

Above 17 inches you have three honest options, and we would rather say that than pad this page. Buy the Withings BPM Vision and its separately sold XL cuff, which is the one large-cuff pairing named in a model's own validation listing rather than merely sold as compatible. Ask your clinician to measure you on a clinic monitor with a thigh cuff. Or use a validated wrist monitor, accepting that a wrist is a less reliable site and has to be held at heart height every time.

What we would not do is buy a generic large cuff advertised as compatible with most monitors. That is a claim about fastening, not about accuracy, and it is the one variable you least want to guess at.

What if my arm is over 17 inches?

Nothing we track fits out of the box. The Withings BPM Vision has an XL cuff for 15.8 to 20.5 inch arms sold separately, and it is the one large cuff named in a model's own validation listing rather than sold as generically compatible. Ask your clinician what they use, and do not buy an unbranded large cuff advertised as fitting most monitors.

Does a cuff that is too small really change the reading?

Yes, and upward. A short bladder has to squeeze harder to close the artery, and the monitor records that extra pressure. The AHA tells you to measure your upper arm and pick a monitor that comes with the correct cuff size for that reason.

How do I measure my upper arm?

Wrap a cloth or vinyl tape around the midpoint of your upper arm, between the shoulder and the elbow, with your arm relaxed at your side. Use that number. A builder's steel tape will not lie flat around an arm.
